The maths of chocolate fountains, a talk by Dr Adam Townsend (University of Durham)
Abstract
Find out how to make predictions for chocolatey flows, and then work out (a) whether we can use other types of chocolate, (b) whether we could make a pioneering ketchup fountain, and (c) why chocolate fountains fall inwards, not directly downwards.
Mathematically we will see the power of the power law. In addition, we will look at the backbone of fluid mechanics, and show why it’s harder than the mechanics of solid objects.

This event will take place in person at the University of Birmingham, and will also be broadcast online via Zoom. There is no need for in-person attendees to register. If you wish to join the event via Zoom, please contact Gemma Reeves by 4.00pm on the day of the talk.
No charge is made to attend meetings. Non-IMA members are welcome.
