Abstract
The speaker will describe how a mathematician became involved in a number of projects which appear to have little connection with mathematics. A selection from some of the following projects will be considered in detail. The Suez Canal, Pedestrian Crossings, Treatment effects in the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, The Severn Bridge, Intensive Care Facilities in a Large Teaching Hospital, The Rapid Transit System at Gatwick Airport, Freight Traffic at the Channel Tunnel.
Prof Griffiths was President of the UK Operational Research Society for a two year period starting January 2006. He is the UK representative on the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), a group consisting of 47 nations.
