The IMA sends our warmest congratulations to HRH Queen Elizabeth II on her 70 years of service, celebrating Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee as the longest serving British monarch. The IMA has a history of connections to HRH The Queen and the Royal Family dating back to 1976.
HRH Duke of Edinburgh, IMA President 1976-77
HRH Duke of Edinburgh, The Queen’s late husband, was the 7th President of the Institiute of Mathematics and its Applications, serving from 1976-1977. During his term, Council meetings were chaired by HRH Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.
The foreword that His Royal Highness signed for the First issue of Teaching Mathematics and its Applications: An International Journal of the IMA, Volume 1, Issue 1, 1982 read as follows:
“A talent for mathematics, like a talent for music or painting, is not given to everyone. Those who are lucky enough to have a talent for mathematics are presented with a very wide choice of opportunities in which they can exploit their talents to their advantage, but only if they apply their talents to the problems of the real world will they also be able to make a contribution to the community as a whole.
I hope the regular publication of ‘The Teaching of Mathematics and its Applications’ will help to focus attention on the important social contributions that can be made by applied mathematics.”
Royal Charter
In 1990 the Institute was incorporated by Royal Charter and was subsequently granted the right to award Chartered Mathematician status.
On the 5 November 2008 Privy Council granted the right to amend the Charter and Byelaws so that a register of Chartered Mathematics Teachers be established by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, to be operated together with or without other mathematics societies to award the designation of Chartered Mathematics Teacher to applicants who are suitably qualified.
Privy Council approved amendments to the Royal Charter and its Byelaws, with effect from 1 July 2015, which include the extension Corporate Membership of the Institute to Associate, Affiliate and Student Members and the creation of two categories of Corporate Members: Advanced Members and General Members.
IMA 50th Anniversary
in 2014, HRH Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Duke of Edinburgh’s daughter HRH Princess Anne served as IMA Patron, in its anniversary year, attending the IMA 50th Anniversary celebrations at The Royal Society and delivering a speech to attendees. IMA members and guests were delighted to hear The Princess Royal speak in support of mathematics. Furthermore Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal received her certificate of IMA Honorary Fellowship at the event and kindly presented a prize certificate to the winner of the Maths Careers competition.
