Would you like to become involved with the Institute’s Education Activities?

An opportunity of joining the Institute’s Schools and Further Education (S&FE) Committee has arisen for members of the Institute who have current or recent teaching experience in a secondary school, Sixth Form or a Further Education college. The Committee welcomes all applications, but is especially seeking to increase its representation from Scotland and Wales, women teachers and ethnic minorities.

The aim of the S&FE Committee is to support members working in this area, work with other bodies involved in mathematics education and take a pro-active approach to relevant policy discussion in government and other national bodies.

Outline Operational Framework of the Schools & Further Education Group;

The IMA’s education activities are co-ordinated by two education committees – the S&FE Committee, and the Higher Education Service Area – under the direction of the Honorary Secretary with responsibility for Education and with the support of the Education Manager.

  • The committee meets three times a year and members are required to attend on a regular basis.
  • Attendance can be in-person or online, though there is an expectation that members attended in-person at least once in the academic year.
  • The practice is for meeting dates to alternate between term-time and vacations with the emphasis being on the latter.
  • All reasonable travel expenses will be met.
  • Membership is for a three-year term, renewable on an ongoing basis.
  • Engagement in e-discussion and e-consultation between meetings, along with the drafting of consultation responses is an important aspect of the commitment.
  • Watching briefs are appointed to committee members to take a lead in areas of particular interest to them.

If you would like to apply to become a member of the S&FE Committee, please submit your CV and a brief statement outlining what you believe you can bring to the Committee to Vanessa Thorogood, Education Manager (Vanessa.thorogood@ima.org.uk), by 9am on Wednesday 5 October 2022.

Applications will be considered at the next Schools and Further Education Committee meeting in October 2022, with the intention of the successful applicants attending their first meeting on Monday 13 February 2023.
