The mathematical sciences transform the lives of individuals, empower governmental and industrial strategies and are driving the solutions to pressing global issues. I am delighted that the Prime Minister has recognised this. His observations about the damage done by negative attitudes towards mathematics are long overdue.
The IMA is the leading professional body for mathematicians in industry and now is a critical time of change for employers across the economy. We need to fully realise digitisation across a range of sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, agriculture, finance and healthcare, to remain the home of world-leading technical innovation companies. Investing in maths will strengthen our talent pipeline and increase industry access to home-grown digital skills, allowing more young people to access fulfilling and exciting careers in business, industry and services.
The IMA continues to drive interest and support teaching in mathematics, from promoting maths in the real world to young people at major national events such as the Big Bang Fair, to developing the Maths Careers website. We work closely with DfE and our partners to support the Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships programme to increase high quality maths teachers in schools. We look forward to continuing to engage with advisory groups to promote new initiatives that improve the understanding and the application of the mathematical sciences for the benefit of everyone.

A Maths to 18 Expert Advisory Group has been formed to provide advice to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Education on how to implement the mission for all young people to study maths to age 18.
