Dr Howard Haughton CMath FIMA was invited to deliver one of the Specialist Lectures at the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) on 31st July 2023. The topic of the lecture was Mathematics and Equality from Specification to Simulation in Inclusive Systems.
Dr Haughton examined the impact of bias, different types of conscious and unconscious bias and how maths can be used to identify and overcome bias by formalising language into mathematical equations to model inclusivity in organisations, thereby demonstrating the need for a scientific and mathematical approach to analysing inclusivity. The lecture also touched on sources of bias in AI.
The event was extremely well received with the students attending. Enrico Caprioglio, Senior Programme Assistant at LIYSF, referred to the session as an “inspiring and motivating lecture”, going on to comment “I have been part of LIYSF for 6 years now and I don’t recall a mathematics talk that generated so much engagement from our students.”
The LIYSF is a unique STEM learning programme for students aged 16-21 years old and is held annually at Imperial College London and The Royal Geographical Society. Each year around 500 students from 70 countries around the world take part. Find out more about the event on the LIYSF website.
