What is the conference about?
Mathematics is an extremely far reaching subject, with applications in most industries the world over. However, sometimes this can make it difficult to find your niche in such a broad area. This conference aims give you an insight into where mathematics can take you, introducing you to career options you may never have considered before. Talks will be given by some truly inspiring mathematicians across many different fields, who will share their experiences of work, as well as how they got to where they are today. After the talks there will be a short Q&A panel session, where you have the chance to ask our experts any questions.

Elliott Myers
Having recently graduated with BSc in Mathematics from the University of Durham, Elliott works as a mathematician for Dstl. His main focus is machine learning, particularly image processing, but also has a background in mathematical physics.

 

 

 

 

Nathan Turner- A Journey Through Applied Mathematics
Applied mathematics is all about using mathematical models and techniques to gain insight into the world around us. The most amazing examples emerge when the same principle is used to understand a wide variety of real-world applications.

In this talk you will uncover the concept of hysteresis, a surprisingly common phenomenon with a huge number of real-world applications. From controlling the temperature of your oven to modelling the population dynamics of bugs in a forest, you will begin to see through examples that applied mathematics is everywhere!
Exploring the applications of this method to aviation safety, environmental sustainability and the perfect cooking of a Sunday roast will emphasise the importance of this mathematical technique. This is just one example of applied mathematics cropping up – on your mathematics journey you are sure to find plenty more… 

 

Sophie Carr – A life less ordinary: adventures in maths
In this enlightening talk, Dr Sophie Carr ventures beyond traditional perceptions of mathematics to showcase the wonderful career that happens if you take the road less travelled (and say yes to opportunities!). Sharing her insights and experiences, Sophie will highlight how maths and statistics can take you from developing gas turbine blades to building a tech company that solves real-world problems, from optimizing business processes to advancing crowd modelling and finding cold and mould in houses. Come and discover the unexpected roles mathematicians play in driving innovation and how a solid foundation in mathematics can open doors to a variety of fulfilling, impactful careers.

 

 

 

 

Dr Nicola Walker – Mathematics in Fisheries Science
Dr Nicola Walker is a principal fisheries stock assessor at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), the UK governments marine and freshwater science experts. She joined Cefas in 2013 after obtaining an Honours degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Marine biology, both from the University of Essex. At Cefas, she leads, conducts, and develops mathematical and statistical models for fisheries research and provides advisory support on the assessments of marine fish stocks to national and international marine management organisations.

 

 

Martine Barons – Bees and Food – how can we make sure we have enough?
Bees and other pollinators are important in human food production, but establishing whether pollinator abundance is sufficient for this is hard.  Which combinations of policies best support pollinator abundance is also a very complex problem.  In this talk I will uncover the techniques which help untangle this complexity. 

Karrie Liu – Mathematics in Healthcare: Internship, Mentorship, and Beyond
Join me in this chat with Sanjidah Ahmed, an A-level maths student who finished her two-week internship at NHS England last summer. We’ll dive into the story of how we crossed paths, unravel the exciting details of her internship experience, and explore the transformative journey our mentorship has taken both of us on. It’s a tale of numbers, healthcare, and a dash of mentorship magic!
