Aerodynamic Aspects of Animal Flight by Sir James Lighthill FRS Hon FIMA (IMA President 1964–1966)
This survey article covers an aspect of flight that may be less associated with aeroacoustics pioneer and first IMA President James Lighthill – animal flight. Lighthill focuses on ‘aerodynamic forces, and the resulting dynamic interactions, between the movements of a flying animal relative to the air and the associated air movements’ and surveys various animals – insects, birds, bats – and modes of flight – including flapping, soaring, hovering, take-off and landing – with photographs and detailed diagrams.
