Mathematics Matters: Showcasing Mathematics in Action

Launching: Mathematics Matters

Showcasing the power of mathematics in shaping our world

Mathematics is everywhere! Driving innovation, informing policy, strengthening businesses, and improving lives. Yet too often, its impact goes unseen.

Mathematics Matters, a new campaign from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), led by IMA President Dr Heather Tewkesbury, is here to change that. We’re shining a light on the remarkable ways modern mathematical sciences are being developed and applied across business, industry, government, and society and we’d like you to be part of it.

We are inviting educators, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and organisations to contribute content that brings mathematics to life and shows why it matters now more than ever.

Why contribute?

By taking part in Mathematics Matters, you will:

  • Showcase real-world applications of mathematics to a broad professional and public audience
  • Help build understanding of how mathematical thinking supports better decisions, smarter systems, and stronger outcomes
  • Be featured and co-branded across IMA’s digital channels, helping amplify your work and insights

We especially welcome contributions from diverse voices, sectors, career stages, and perspectives.

What we’re looking for

We welcome submissions that showcase meaningful mathematical content, real-world impact, and engaging insights. Formats include:

  • Case Study Spotlights: Written articles (500–800 words) or videos (1–3 minutes) highlighting practical applications in business, government, or society.
  • Video Shorts: 30–90 second videos for social media with clear, engaging visuals such as animations, captions, or graphs.
  • Infographic Snapshots: Static or animated infographics for social media and email that clearly communicate a mathematical insight or result.
  • Interview Series: Blog or podcast interviews with mathematicians, analysts, or data leaders that humanise mathematics in practice.
  • “IMA Explains” Posts: Short explainer videos or infographic carousels that clarify mathematical ideas and their applications.

Strong submissions focus on meaningful mathematical content, practical applications, and insights that inform, inspire, or demonstrate innovative practice. We cannot accept content that is purely promotional.

All submissions are reviewed by the IMA team. Selected contributions will be co-branded and scheduled to ensure balanced coverage across sectors, mathematical fields, and audiences.
