The IMA / BCS / IET Christmas Lecture

The Influence of Perception: the IMA / BCS / IET Christmas Lecture by Orla Murphy (Jaguar Land Rover)

Abstract

Orla will discuss her insights into the Automotive industry, particularly the unprecedented growth in importance and dependence on electrical systems.  She will give examples from her work and testing at Jaguar Land Rover in this area.  This includes working as an acoustic engineer, designing and calibrating the audio systems within the vehicles, to problem solving and quality issues, to her latest project: Software Over-the-Air (SOTA).

About the Speaker

Orla Murphy is the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2015 and the Royal Academy of Engineering Young Engineer of the Year 2016.  She is very committed to encouraging more people, both boys and girls, into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers.

Orla is a Forward Model Quality Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover, focusing on problem solving and six sigma process improvement projects within the Electrical Engineering department.  She studied an MEng degree in Electronics with Music at the University of Glasgow, completing part of her studies abroad at the University of Radford in the USA.  She first joined Jaguar Land Rover as a sponsored student in 2012.  For five years Orla worked as an Audio Calibration Engineer, optimising the sound systems within Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.  She became a Chartered Engineer through the IET in February and moved to her new role in Quality in March 2017.
