The Institute’s Vice President for Professional Affairs and Industry, Dr Nira Chamberlain CMath CSci FIMA, is fifth on the 2018 Powerlist. The list was announced during the 30th Black History Month at the annual Powerlist awards dinner in London on 24 October 2017.
The Powerlist (www.powerlist.co.uk) promotes Britain’s top 100 most influential people of African and African Caribbean herit- age, and is recognised as a valuable source of the UK’s talent. Running since 2007, each year of the prominent awards has gained increasing momentum across a wealth of industry sectors.
Also, during Black History Month, The Reach Society awarded Nira its Victoria Mutual Champions Award (see photo) for his extraordinary contributions to the Society at the annual Recogni- tion Awards and fund-raising dinner on 21 October.
The Reach Society (www.reachsociety.com), which recently received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, is a social ac- tion group which motivates and inspires young people to excel in education and seek a profession in life.
Nira is a principal consultant in Data & Decision Sciences at Babcock International Group. He is listed by the Science Council as ‘one of the UK’s top 100 Scientists’ and has been described by Loughborough University as one of its Greatest Scientific Minds.
With an emphasis on creating a brighter future, Nira is a strong campaigner for STEM initiatives. Working recently with UK charity, Speakers for Schools, as well as featuring on BBC’s Expert Voices programme, Nira is bringing everyday maths and engineering to youngsters in a simple and engaging way. He was also the first black mathematician to be included in Who’s Who.
Talking of his Powerlist nomination, Nira said:
I have always had a passion for science and mathematics. It surrounds us every day and by embracing this, we can play our part to enhance, develop and shape the world for the future. I hope that my work encourages young- sters into STEM, knowing that there is something new and exciting for them to discover. Joining the Powerlist alongside such illustrious company is real honour.
