Eat Y’Self Fitter, and other adventures in mathematical biology, a talk by Jon Pitchford (University of York)
Abstract
Mathematicians are not like normal people. We are trained think slowly and carefully, and to grasp the important fundamental truths hidden among confusion and distraction. This perhaps makes us difficult to work with (and even more difficult to live with), but our skills are increasingly important in a biological world which is drowning in technology and “Big Data”. I will try to give an overview of some of the work our group is involved in, with applications ranging from evolution and ecology to medicine and molecular biology, and usually relying on creative combinations of the traditional subcultures of “pure”, “applied” and “statistics”.
About the Speaker
Dr Jon Pitchford is a Reader in the Departments of Mathematics and Biology at the University of York. Recent work includes collaborative development of a new online data sharing system which could reduce the need for hundreds of laboratory tests on animals.
