Modelling the Real World – Simulation in the 21st Century, Dr. Richard Blake (Director, Computational Science and Engineering Department, Science and Technology Facilities Council, Daresbury Laboratories, Warrington)
Abstract
This talk will review briefly the breathtaking development in high performance computing (HPC) technologies over the past twenty years which looks set to continue unabated for the next decade at least. The technical challenges of developing codes that can exploit systems with millions of processors will be overviewed. Next-generation simulation and modelling will be able to address important scientific, economic and societal problems such as developing high-resolution Earth system models including hydro-ecological, biogeochemical, ice, cloud physics and aerosol processes to better assess the impact of climate change; cleaner/ more efficient energy from conventional/ bio-fuel systems and fission/ fusion systems; virtual design of advanced materials with specific electro/ magnetic/ optical properties and processes for their production; modelling the biological properties of cells, their components and the higher order function of tissues, organs and body systems to develop next generation personalised medicine and foodstuffs.
In order to address these scientific challenges we must develop system models that integrate predictive simulations at many different length and time scales. The complexity of the science and the challenges of exploiting the technology will require the integrated efforts of a critical mass of experts in many domains – and we are developing plans for the Hartree Centre to meet this need building on the current CSE activities at Daresbury.
The Hartree Centre will be a new kind of computational sciences institute, bringing together academic, government and industrial scientists to focus on multi-disciplinary, multi-scale, efficient and effective computation.
