The IMA offers it’s congratulations to Dr Nira Chamberlain, Professor Veronica Bowman, and Lynne McClure who were awarded OBEs in the 2022 New Year Honours list.
Dr Nira Chamberlain CMath CSci FIMA is Professional Head of Discipline – Data Science at SNC Lavalin Atkins and the IMA’s immediate past president. He was awarded an OBE for services to Mathematical Sciences. Nira is a mathematical modeller who solves complex industrial problems and is also well-known for his outreach work. Recently this included the Black Heroes of Mathematics conferences, a Parliamentary and Scientific Committee webinar on Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms, and representing Portsmouth on University Challenge.
Professor Veronica Bowman CMath FIMA is a Statistics and Data Science Fellow at Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). She was awarded an OBE for services to Defence and the Covid-19 Response. Veronica developed CrystalCast, a disease forecast modelling tool, which aids our understanding of the progression of COVID-19 and informs government policy. Her research focuses on uncertainty propagation and Bayesian inference.
Lynne McClure FIMA is Director of Cambridge Mathematics and was awarded an OBE for services to Education. Lynne was president of the Mathematical Association for 2014–2015. She has also served on the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education and is a National Numeracy trustee.
