New IMA President 2022-2023, Paul Glendinning


The IMA is delighted to welcome a new President for 2022-2023, Paul Glendinning FRSE FIMA. Paul succeeds Dr Nira Chamberlain OBE CMath CSci FIMA, who served as IMA President from 2020-2021. There were many highlights during Nira’s Presidency, which include establishing the successful Black Heroes of Mathematics conference in 2020 and being interviewed by Jim Al-Khalili as part of The Life Scientific radio series. The IMA extends a warm thank you to Nira for his work as President of the IMA, leading the organisation throughout an unprecedented period.

On beginning his new role as IMA President Paul has said:

“I can’t remember a time when mathematics and the impact of mathematics has been so much in the people’s minds. From modelling the pandemic, to AI in medicine to advances in the analysis of large data sets, mathematics is central to public health and the economy. This demonstrates the excitement and relevance of mathematics to the next generation and emphasises the importance of mathematics education and research. The joy of the IMA is the way it straddles all aspects of the mathematical sciences and I am very proud to be taking over as President.
The IMA is also about people: the people who use and develop mathematics in all sorts of contexts and at all sorts of levels. We have diverse interests centred around the subject, and we’re a diverse bunch of people. This diversity should be embraced and supported. We have a responsibility to foster an inclusive environment in all our activity.
An exciting opportunity of my Presidency is the development of our strategy for the next 5 years. I hope we will see a vibrant discussion about how we move forward and what our priorities will be. At the heart of this is what we offer members, and where this involvement can be made more effective and more fun! The national ecology of mathematical sciences may be changing, with plans for an Academy under discussion. The IMA will continue to play a strong and leading role in the mathematical sciences however this develops.”
