The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications are pleased to invite nominations for the 2024 IMA Gold Medal.
The Institute Gold Medal is awarded biennially in recognition of outstanding contributions to mathematics and its applications over a period of years.
Contributions that are recognised with the IMA Gold Medal are intentionally very broad. The first medals, in 1982, were awarded to the IMA’s first president Sir James Lighthill ‘for his wide-ranging contributions to the applications of mathematics and the development of its techniques’ and Dr Alan Tayler ‘for his energetic and fruitful activity in strengthening the application of mathematics in industry’.
The latest medal in 2022 was awarded to Professor Philip K. Maini FRS FMedSci FIMA ‘in recognition of his profound contributions to mathematics in biology and medicine’

The IMA Gold Medal winner will be invited to receive the Gold Medal and give a talk at the 2025 IMA Summer Lecture.

Contributions that can be considered vary greatly and might take the form of:
- the building up of a research group of exceptional merit
- notable contributions to the application of mathematical techniques
- outstanding contributions to the improvement of the teaching of mathematics
