Join the IMA ECM committee in welcoming Ziyang Yang from Lancaster University to talk about her work in a ‘Lunch and Learn’ session. Ziyang was a runner up in the 2024 TakeAim competition hosted by the Smith Institute. She’ll tell us about her work and we’ll open the virtual floor to Q&A.
The Internet of Things (IoT) landscape is expanding rapidly, with diverse devices collecting and sharing data with the cloud to revolutionize various aspects of our lives. A common application in this domain is real-time monitoring. For example, monitoring critical changes such as spikes in blood pressure for a patient in an ICU through wearable devices, monitoring the activity of elderly individuals in a smart home to detect sudden falls, or monitoring the energy usage in the building. However, managing data privacy becomes complex because data can be vulnerable to hacking during the devices-cloud transmission. How can we use mathematics to ensure privacy while detecting changes in such a real-time system as quickly as possible? We will discuss this challenge and introduce our proposed method in this talk.
