The IMA offers its congratulations to Professor Paul Glaister CMath CSci FIMA who was awarded a CBE for services to Education in the King’s New Year Honours list.
Professor Paul Glaister is Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of Reading and is also the IMA’s Honorary Secretary for Membership.
Professor Paul Glendinning, IMA President said of Paul’s achievement:
“The award of CBE to our Membership Secretary, Paul Glaister, is well deserved; Paul has worked tirelessly for the community on engagement and education. This award emphasises the quality and scope of our members, and his was not the only recognition of the mathematical sciences in the New Years’ Honours List.”
Professor Michael Grove FIMA, who worked with Paul on the IMA Council in his capacity as Honorary Secretary for Education, from 2017 to 2022, said:
“When I heard the news of Paul’s CBE in the King’s New Year Honours List I was truly delighted. I cannot imagine anyone more deserving. He has worked tirelessly to champion mathematics education, particularly pre-university mathematics education, and he has selflessly supported so many other colleagues in developing their careers. He is a true inspiration and I am privileged to be able to work alongside him.”
Professor Glaister said:
“I am totally overwhelmed and humbled by being appointed CBE in the King’s New Year Honours List. I am hugely grateful to the IMA, and the many colleagues, officers, committee members, and others across this great learned society who I have worked with – I am indebted to them all for their enduring support of my activities, and for the opportunities I have had to be able to pursue my passion for mathematics and mathematics education across the IMA. This award recognises the importance of education and research in mathematical and quantitative sciences to individuals, and ultimately for the benefit of society, all of which are integral to the aims of the IMA.”
Paul is a member of many IMA committees, including Council, Executive Board, Chair of the Membership Committee and Chair of the CMathTeach Registration Authority in his role as Honorary Secretary. He is also Vice-Chair of the Schools and Further Education Committee and a member of the Professional Affairs Committee. He is responsible for the IMA’s Advanced Data Science Professional (AdvDSP) certification, as part of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals, and a member of the Alliance’s Steering Group. Professor Glaister is an assessor for the IMA’s Course Accreditation. He is a member of the London Mathematical Society’s Education and International Affairs Committees; Joint Mathematical Council (UK); Royal Society (RS) Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education and the Deputy Chair of the RS Expert Panel for A-level; and the UK representative to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction. He has also reviewed qualifications for the Department for Education; Ofqual; Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment in Northern Ireland; and Qualification Wales, including for A-levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and for Core Mathematics.
