Are you an early career mathematician or statistician working at a university who is going to be teaching soon? Are you interested in current best teaching practices? Are you looking to improve your teaching style and want to know where to start looking? Are you interested in seeing new techniques and software individuals use in their approaches? Are you preparing an application for Fellowship to advanceHE? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, this event may well be for you.
This idea exchange event will offer the opportunity for early career HE educators to connect with the networks that support the enhancement of mathematical and statistical pedagogies, and offer an opportunity for an exchange of ideas amongst practitioners. By bringing together representatives from the IMA, London Mathematical Society (LMS), Teaching And Learning Mathematics Online (TALMO), Royal Statistical Society (RSS), Mathematical Association (MA), British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM), the sigma network, and the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning– Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research in Higher Education (CETL-MSOR), we hope to highlight the incredible work done to continually improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and statistics.
We begin the event with individuals discussing what their organisation does, ranging from different events and workshops, special interest groups, and funding opportunities. After that, in a series of lightning talks, practitioners will showcase successful tools and activities from their teaching, to facilitate the generation of innovative practice amongst delegates. Finally, a reflection period will offer the opportunity for delegates to discuss practice, concerns and qualms with experienced members of the education landscape. Some prompts for the reflection period are as follows:
• Was there any technology demonstrated that could be helpful in your teaching
• Do you think you will be able to apply any of the techniques described today at your institution?
• Has anything spoken about today changed your perception on teaching in HE?
• How can we remove the attitude and barrier between research and teaching?
We hope this event will highlight the wealth of support for teaching and learning to those new to HE mathematics and statistics education, as well as offer practical ideas to inform and innovate their own practice. We will collect a bank of resources for participants to refer to if they apply for any advanced HE qualification.
