The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is delighted to announce the launch of new policy guidance for SMEs looking to develop their Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities at our 2023 Employers’ Forum.
Our new policy document has been independently written by IMA Fellow Dr Howard Haughton CMath FIMA, who is a co-opted member of IMA Council, a member of the Professional Affairs Committee and the IMA London Branch. He is Director of his own Risk Management consultancy Holistic Risk Solutions Ltd. and is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.
The policy document provides a framework for an AI policy which can be adapted to meet the specific requirements of an SME organisation. It is a comprehensive source of information and current thought on how organisations could approach a policy of this nature, and build in the appropriate risk indicators to ensure management and visibility of their exposure to this fast- evolving area of risk.
Mathematics underpins data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning development. The IMA has been supporting work to create professional standards in data science and related fields, as part of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals. Our members have experienced first-hand how smaller organisations will particularly benefit from further impartial support and guidance to aid their research and development decisions in AI technology.

Through this policy, the IMA has provided guidelines, based on the Alliance for Data Science Professional certification standards, to enhance data privacy, ethical behaviour and responsible use of AI/ML”
