The IMA’s newly-relaunched Irish Branch is hosting a unique celebration to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. The branch will host a screening of Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani, a documentary exploring the life and legacy of Prof. Dr. Maryam Mirzakhani; who on 2014 was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honour in mathematics – a rare accomplishment by a woman mathematician.
Born and raised in Iran, she defied cultural and social barriers to reach the summit of her field, redefining it in the process. A child prodigy and three-time International Mathematical Olympiad champion, her story is one of female emancipation. Though she passed away at the young age of 40, her vision continues to inspire the global mathematical community.
