Presidential Address 2016 – Cultural challenges facing the mathematical sciences

Professor Chris Linton will give his IMA Presidential Address, Cultural challenges facing the mathematical sciences

Abstract

The mathematical sciences ecosystem is a land full of excitement and opportunity. But there is a danger that much of this will be missed if we cling to 20th century priorities and value judgements. As the environment around us evolves, so must we. In this talk I will describe some of those areas where I believe change is most needed and what the consequent benefits might be.

The President, Professor Chris Linton, will give his Presidential Address at 6.00 p.m. on Thursday, 30 June 2016, at the Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG, with registration opening at 5.30 p.m. He will subsequently repeat his talk at our UK Branches.

The audience will include Institute members and invited guests from government, industry, education, and kindred professional and learned associations.

The Address will follow the Institute’s AGM. A separate notice about this will also be circulated with the June issue of Mathematics Today.

Entrance to the Presidential Address is free of charge but a ticket is required. A Reception for members and their guests will be available afterwards at a cost of £16.00 per person.
