Manoeuvring in Fluids: Practical Applications, Dr Edmund A. Chadwick (University of Salford)
Abstract
The speaker presented a lecture on theoretical aspects of this subject in January 2014. This talk will present a variety of practical applications concerning man-made objects and living creatures that manoeuvre in fluids.
These include flying aircraft, sailing ships, manoeuvring submarines, flapping and hovering birds and insects, swimming fish, swerving and flying footballs, tennis balls and shuttlecocks, and many microbiological motions that are in fluids.
We describe pictorially some of these motions and discuss possible next generation devices for fluid propulsion taking their cue from the natural world, using mathematical models to approximate the Navier-Stokes equations that accurately describe the motion of air and water. In particular, we present new insights based on mathematical formulations for the Oseen and Stokes equations, potential flow and boundary integral Green’s function representations.
