The beauty of maths is in its adaptability, a talk by Dr Zoe Kelson (Smith Institute)

Abstract

The mathematical sciences are highly transferable across various domains, generating insight and value whether applied to finance, medicine, forensic science, transport, environment, energy, telecommunications, defence or security, to name but nine.  The breadth and depth of mathematical thinking creates versatility, and can be used as an enabler to bring government, academia and industry together for the benefit of all.  Furthermore, the concept that modern day evolution is the passing on of knowledge and technology from generation to generation supports the importance of transferring mathematical know-how and maximising its adaptation to the current environment.

As a mathematician for the Smith Institute and a self-proclaimed ambassador of the mathematical sciences, I actively promote the practice of industrial mathematics and facilitate knowledge exchange within and between disciplines, with the overall aim to improve the world using mathematics.  This talk will focus on examples and case studies of mathematical applications in different sectors, taken from my career to date, and will demonstrate the changing landscape of mathematical approaches required by industry, driven at least partly by the demand to draw information from big data coupled with the emerging service-era we are now living in.
