Following the recent move to new premises in central Southend-on-Sea, the IMA are excited to commence an innovative project with the Focal Point Gallery for 2026. This project will use contemporary art as a creative lens to explore and illuminate mathematical concepts for young people.
About the Project
The initiative will:
- Use patterns, symmetry, sequences, and spatial reasoning as creative tools for learning.
- Be led by a renowned national artist, who will employ projection mapping and DMX lighting to visualise mathematical ideas on a large scale.
- Include voluntary support and input from a mathematician.
- Work with one Year 6 group and one Year 7 group.
- Activate a decommissioned plane at a local primary school through projection mapping.
- Explore potential off-site workshops with local STEAM employers, linking mathematics with engineering and the built environment.
- Deliver six workshops, culminating in a celebration event.
Call for Interest
We are seeking a volunteer drawn from our network of skilled mathematicians and invite expressions of interest from IMA members with engineering expertise. Your role would involve collaborating with the artist during development sessions, providing expert input and oversight to ensure mathematical accuracy and meaningful STEM (STEAM) engagement.
If you would like to volunteer for this project, please send a brief outline of what you can contribute to Emma Emmerton by Friday 9th January 2026.
Initial meetings with the artist, mathematician, and gallery are planned for early February 2026.
