IMA Honorary Secretary for Membership

Help Shape the Future of IMA Membership

The IMA Council is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Honorary Secretary of Membership to play a key leadership role in supporting the Membership Committee from January 2027. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of the profession, support high standards of membership, and help guide the assessment and recognition of members seeking professional and chartered status.

About the Membership Committee

The Membership Committee operates under delegated authority from the IMA’s Council and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Byelaws relating to the election, transfer, and suspension of membership and Chartered designations.

The Committee’s work covers all aspects of membership, with a particular focus on:

Assessing applications for Advanced Membership and Chartered Mathematician Designations.
Approving procedures for admission to membership grades and chartered designations.
Setting criteria and guidelines for membership grades and chartered designations.
Supporting the Secretariat in developing membership recruitment and retention strategies.
Ensuring fair, consistent, and robust membership assessment processes.

The IMA is also the Registration Authority for the Chartered Mathematics Teacher (CMathTeach) designation and, as such, the Honorary Secretary for Membership also chairs these meetings to review applications, oversee the assessment process and approve recommendations and/or requests for further information.

Who We Are Looking For

Candidates must be a Chartered Mathematician and Fellow of the IMA. They should also:

Have a strong understanding of professional membership standards and qualifications.
Demonstrate sound judgement and decision-making skills.
Be able to work collaboratively with volunteers, committee members, and staff.
Be committed to maintaining high professional and ethical standards.
Have interest and understanding of the work of IMA members across business, industry, government, academia and education.
Have excellent organisational and communication skills.
Be passionate about IMA membership and professional registration.

Working alongside experienced and dedicated volunteers, this is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the profession and Influence IMA membership standards and professional recognition routes.

Key responsibilities and time commitment

The Membership Committee meets three times each year (typically in March, July and November) in a hybrid format, with members able to attend either online or in person in London.

The Chartered Mathematics Teacher Registration Authority meets three times each year in a hybrid format, with members able to attend either online or in person in London.

Other commitments include taking part in the IMA’s Qualifications Subgroup reviews.

The maximum term is for six years.

Trustee and Member of Council

By its Royal Charter the IMA is required to have two Honorary Secretaries. These are amongst the seven Honorary Officers specified in the Charter.

The Honorary Secretary for Membership is an ex officio member of IMA Council.

There are three Council meetings per year, the dates of which are set well in advance, but are usually in March, June and November. Honorary Officers of the IMA are expected to contribute to strategic reviews and planning and attend relating planning events and meetings.

Council members are currently IMA trustees, and as such, must meet the eligibility criteria to hold trustee positions within a registered Charity as set out by the Charity Commission.

Member of the Executive Board

The Executive Board currently meets three/four times per year, usually in March, June and November.

Member of the Professional Standards Board (new)

The IMA is forming a new, independent Professional Standards Board which reports to Council to oversee and monitor the IMA’s professional standards, Codes of Conduct and quality assurance processes, leading periodic reviews of the professional competency frameworks for CMath and CMathTeach, degree accreditation and certification of employer schemes.

How to Nominate

Criteria / Requirements:

Self-nomination is permitted for this voluntary role; the deadline is 11 September 2026.
Nominees must be Chartered Mathematician and a Fellow.
Nominees should submit a summary, stating their background and their reasons for standing for this role, with their nomination form. These summaries must not exceed 500 words.
The nomination must be supported by two members who have attained the IMA grade of FIMA.
