Manoeuvring in Fluids, Dr Edmund Chadwick (University of Salford)
Abstract
Many things manoeuvre in fluids, man-made as well as living creatures: flying aircraft, sailing ships, manoeuvring submarines, flapping and hovering birds and insects, swimming fish, as well as swerving and flying footballs, tennis balls, shuttle cocks, and also many microbiological motions are in fluids.
In this lecture we shall first set the scene by describing pictorially some of these motions, together with discussing possible next generation devices for fluid propulsion taking their cue from the natural world. We will then look at mathematical models that approximate the Navier-Stokes equations which are the equations of motion that accurately describe the behaviour of air and water. We focus on the work of the author on mathematical formulations for the Oseen and Stokes equations, and for potential flow, particularly boundary integral Green’s function representations and explain the new insight into the manoeuvring question the author’s research gives.
