Research Committee
The IMA Research Committee represents the mathematical sciences community by engaging with research funders, policymakers, and other key stakeholders across the UK. It helps ensure that mathematics research remains visible, influential, and well-supported within the wider research landscape.
The Committee maintains strong relationships with organisations including UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and government departments. Through these connections, it contributes to discussions on research strategy, funding priorities, and the future direction of the mathematical sciences.
A key part of the Committee’s role is providing expert input to consultations and national initiatives. This includes nominating and supporting candidates for major research bodies, panels, and advisory groups, helping to ensure that the mathematical sciences are effectively represented in decision-making processes.
The Committee works closely with partner organisations through the Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS), bringing together a collective voice for the discipline across the UK. It has also supported initiatives that demonstrate the impact of mathematics in research, industry, society, and everyday life.
In addition, the Committee oversees the IMA Small Grants Scheme, supporting a wide range of research activities and community initiatives. It works in partnership with the IMA Journals Board of Management, which is responsible for the Institute’s portfolio of academic journals, helping to strengthen and promote excellence in mathematical research.
