Who can join the IMA?

Anyone with an interest in mathematics can join the IMA. Whether you're a student, teacher, academic, professional who uses mathematics in their work, or simply have an interest in the subject, we have a membership grade to suit your qualifications and experience.

What are the different membership grades?
We offer five membership grades designed to support people at every stage of their mathematical journey, from students and early career professionals to experienced practitioners and leaders in the field. Which IMA membership grade is right for me?

The right membership grade depends on your qualifications, professional experience, and career stage. Whether you're a student, an early-career professional, an experienced practitioner, or simply someone with an interest in mathematics, the IMA offers a membership grade designed to support you.

How much does IMA membership cost?

IMA membership rates vary depending on your membership grade. Current annual rates start from £11 for Student Members, with other grades ranging from £75 to £153 per year. Membership fees for Member (MIMA) and Fellow (FIMA) applications may also include an entrance fee for new applicants.

Can I join the IMA if I'm not working as a mathematician?

Yes. Many of our members apply mathematics in a wide range of professions, including engineering, finance, data science, education, software development, analytics, and consulting.

If you have an interest in mathematics or use mathematical skills in your work, there is likely a membership grade that's right for you. Affiliate Membership has no formal entry requirements.

Can students join the IMA?

Yes. Students studying for a mathematics degree, a joint degree involving mathematics, or a degree with significant mathematical content may be eligible for Student Membership.

Student Membership provides access to benefits including a digital subscription to Mathematics Today, online access to IMA journals, mentoring through IMA Exponential, discounted conference rates, career development support, and opportunities to engage with the wider mathematics community.

Can I join the IMA if I've retired or changed career?

Yes. If you previously met the requirements for one of our advanced membership grades, you may still be eligible to apply. We welcome applications from retired professionals and those whose careers have taken them into different fields.

How do I rejoin the IMA?
We'd be delighted to welcome you back. If you were previously a member and would like to rejoin, please visit our Rejoin the IMA page for information about te process and any information you may need to provide.
 

Do you offer a reduced membership rate for retired members?

Yes. A reduced subscription rate is available on request for members who:

  • Are aged 60 or over
  • Have been an IMA member for at least 10 years
  • Are fully retired

How do I upgrade my IMA membership grade?

You can apply to upgrade your membership grade at any time if your qualifications or professional experience have changed. Upgrading may give you access to additional postnominals and recognition that reflects your achievements.

Can I join the IMA if I live outside the UK?

Yes. IMA membership is open to eligible applicants worldwide. The IMA has a global community of more than 5,000 members spanning academia, education, industry, and the wider mathematical profession.

No matter where you are based, you can apply online and access many of the professional, networking, digital, and career development benefits available to members.


Can I apply for Chartered Mathematician (CMath) through the IMA?

Yes. The IMA is the professional body that awards the Chartered Mathematician (CMath) designation, which recognises high levels of professional competence and commitment to continuing professional development in mathematics.

To apply for CMath, you must first become a Member (MIMA) or Fellow (FIMA) of the IMA and meet the required standards of education, professional experience, competence, and continuing professional development.
