Higher Education

The Higher Education Committee supports the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications' work across the higher education sector, promoting excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics and helping to shape the future of university mathematics education. The Committee considers matters relating to higher education mathematics, advises the IMA on developments across the sector, and contributes to policy and consultation activity where appropriate.

Bringing together academics, mathematics educators and sector representatives, the Committee provides a forum for discussing current issues in higher education, sharing effective practice, and supporting the mathematical sciences community. The Committee also works closely with the Schools and Further Education Committee to consider the transition from pre-university mathematics into higher education.

The Committee oversees a range of activities that support teaching, learning and professional practice within higher education, including the:

  • IMA/RSS/LMS Higher Education Teaching and Learning Grants, which support projects and initiatives that enhance mathematics teaching and learning.
  • The IMA John Blake University Teaching Medal, awarded biennially in recognition of outstanding contributions to the teaching of mathematics in higher education.
  • The Degree Course Accreditation and Recognition scheme, which recognises high-quality mathematics degree courses and supports professional standards across the sector.
  • The Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences, which supports colleagues at the start of their academic careers as they develop their teaching practice and understanding of higher education mathematics.
  • The IMA's network of Academic Representatives, helping to strengthen engagement between universities and the Institute.

The Committee also works collaboratively with organisations across the mathematical sciences community, helping to ensure that the IMA remains an active and influential voice in discussions relating to higher education mathematics.

Through these activities, the Committee supports academics, departments and institutions in delivering high-quality mathematics education and fostering the next generation of mathematicians.
