Schools & Further Education

Discover how the IMA’s Schools & Further Education Committee champions high-quality mathematics education, supporting teachers, learners, and policy development from Key Stage 3 to pre-university.

The Schools and Further Education (S&FE) Committee supports the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications' work across mathematics education from Key Stage 3 through to pre-university study, including further education, adult learners and those retaking qualifications.

The Committee brings together experienced teachers, lecturers, mathematics educators and others with an interest in pre-higher education mathematics. Through its work, the Committee helps the IMA understand the challenges and opportunities facing mathematics education, ensuring that the perspectives of schools, colleges and adult learning providers inform the Institute's activities and priorities.

The Committee considers a wide range of issues relating to the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools and further education, as well as the broader educational landscape in which these sit. It advises the IMA on matters affecting mathematics education and contributes to policy development and consultation responses where appropriate.

Working with organisations across the mathematics education community, including the Joint Mathematical Council (JMC), the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) and other sector bodies, the Committee helps to ensure that the IMA plays an active role in discussions that shape mathematics education.

The Committee's activities include:

  • Considering developments and emerging issues in school and further education mathematics.
  • Advising the IMA on matters relating to mathematics education.
  • Contributing to policy development and consultation responses.
  • Supporting collaboration across the mathematics education community
  • Promoting the value of mathematics and the benefits of IMA membership for teachers and educators.
  • Working with the Higher Education Committee on matters relating to the transition between pre-university and university mathematics.

Through these activities, the Committee supports the IMA's commitment to promoting high-quality mathematics education and encouraging engagement with mathematics across all stages of pre-university learning
