Student Postgraduate
We run a diverse programme of conferences including our Early Career Mathematicians group’s Autumn Conference for students, postgraduates and recent graduates in business and industry. We publish eight journals, which you can access online for free as an IMA member or your University will have access to these. We award chartered registration as Chartered Mathematician, Scientist or Mathematics Teacher.
Associate Membership
As a holder of a degree in the mathematical sciences you are eligible to apply for Associate Membership of the IMA which carries the designatory (post-nominal) letters AMIMA.
Joining is easy: just click on the myIMA tab, create an account and follow ‘Join Us’ process. As an AMIMA, you can start working towards registration as a Chartered Mathematician (CMath) or Chartered Scientist (CSci) . For more information, please visit the Chartered Mathematician and Initial Professional Development pages.
As a member of the IMA, you will receive the members’ magazine, Mathematics Today six times per year, the right to vote at the AGM and in the IMA Council elections and discounted fees for IMA events and the eligibility to apply for one of our Small Grants for individual activities which will support your research. You will also receive communications about local branch events.
University Liaison
Our Membership Development Executive is responsible for University Liaison and student engagement. As well as raising awareness of the IMA with the postgraduate student population, they also support postgraduate conferences and careers events which includes the British Applied Mathematics Colloquium, which is sponsored by the IMA.
Joint IMA-SIAM Chapters
The IMA has agreed with SIAM UKIE on the mutual support of Joint Student Chapters. Joint chapters are eligible to apply for a grant of £400 to support their activities. For further details, please contact us. Where possible we will attend your annual student meetings and we have copies of the IMA 50th anniversary book, 50 Visions of Mathematics for student poster or presentation prizes at the meetings. We are also pleased to offer financial support to the annual SIAM UKIE annual student conference.

Pursuing a PhD
Finding funding for PhD can be difficult, there is a little research council money. Unforunately the IMA does not have the resources to fund research itself, no matter how worthy the topic or the researcher. Mathematicians need to be flexible in their search for funded PhD options. Looking more broadly, under Engineering or Biology and medical science listings as well as the Maths and Computing ones may yield interesting opportunities to take your maths in a new direction.
Find a PhD is an excellent resource covering MSc and Postdoc opportunities as well as PhD and include help and advice to support you in the application process.
