ECM EDI Event: Focus on EDI Initiatives

Join the ECM committee for the relaunch of our annual EDI event where for 2026 we are talking all about EDI initiatives. We will hear from three organisations doing work to break down barriers to maths. Hannah Ford Tomlinson at the Lightyear Foundation will talk to us about the work they do to make STEM more accessible to disabled and neurodivergent people, we will hear from Elinor Flavell at the Piscopia Initiative about their network for women and underrepresented genders in mathematics, and Luciano Rila and Lena Lyanna Payne will tell us about the Queer Equality and Diversity (QED) network and how they support LGBTQIA+ members of mathematics in the UK.

After hearing from our speakers, we will have a discussion session about Starting EDI Initiatives in Maths. Have you identified an area of maths which is not accessible to everyone? Or, do you have an idea for how to include more people in the mathematics community? During this VMT, we invite you to think about initiatives you would like to see in maths and, together with our speakers, we will discuss how you can get such projects off the ground - whether in your university, workplace or in the wider mathematics community. We hope that this event can highlight opportunities for greater inclusion in maths, provide a positive space to discuss issues, and bring together mathematicians who are interested in EDI.

The ECM EDI event is an annual event hosted by the Early Career Mathematicians committee where we focus on promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the maths community. If you are unable to make this event or if the topic of this event is not for you, then please check the events page for details of all our upcoming events. If you have an idea for an event or would like to co-host an event with the ECM committee, you can get in contact via [email protected].

Final information will be sent out 24 hours before the event.
