Alex Bellos Is Awarded the 2026 Christopher Zeeman Medal
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) are delighted to announce that Alex Bellos has been awarded the 2026
Christopher Zeeman Medal.
Alex Bellos is one of the UK’s most influential communicators of mathematics. Drawing on his background in journalism, he has brought mathematics to audiences far beyond its traditional reach through bestselling books, newspaper columns, radio and television appearances, online media, and public engagement activities.
His first popular mathematics book, Alex’s Adventures in Numberland, was a major bestseller, followed by Alex Through the Looking-Glass and several further books that have
collectively sold more than one million copies. Since 2015, his mathematics puzzles column for The Guardian has attracted a large and loyal readership and has become a valuable free resource for schools.
Alex has also reached millions through his appearances on the YouTube channel Numberphile. Popular videos such as The Scientific Way to Cut A Cake and Elliptical Pool
Table have inspired viewers worldwide through their blend of mathematical curiosity, inquiry and playfulness.
Through his writing, broadcasting, digital media presence and extensive programme of talks for schools, universities, festivals and teachers, Alex has helped shape the contemporary landscape of public mathematical culture in the UK. His work demonstrates that engagement with mathematics can be accessible, entertaining and intellectually rewarding for everyone.
The Christopher Zeeman Medal recognises excellence in the communication of mathematics to the public. Alex Bellos is a highly deserving recipient whose work has transformed the way many people encounter and appreciate mathematics.
