About the Committee

The Higher Education Committee considers matters relating to the teaching and learning of mathematics in higher education, as well as the wider context in which higher education mathematics operates. The Committee works closely with the Schools & FE Committee to support the mathematical journey from school and further education into higher education.

Our Work Includes:

  • Developing policy and recommendations on issues affecting higher education mathematics, including assessment and the use of technology in teaching and learning.
  • Overseeing and developing the IMA Course Accreditation and Recognition process.
  • Contributing to workshops, events and activities relating to teaching and learning in higher education.
  • Building relationships with organisations across the mathematical sciences community.
  • Making recommendations for the biennial IMA John Blake University Teaching Medal.
  • Promoting the value and benefits of IMA membership to students and staff in higher education.
Who Can Apply?

We're keen to hear from IMA members who teach or have taught mathematics in higher education, as well as those with an interest in higher education policy and practice relating to mathematics.

The Committee benefits from a broad range of perspectives and experience, and we welcome applications from colleagues across the sector.

What Is Involved?
  • Membership is for an initial three-year term, with the option to serve for a further three years.
  • The Committee meets four times a year, usually in September, January, March and June.
  • Meetings are usually held online, with one in-person meeting each year.
  • One meeting each year is held jointly with the Schools & FE Committee.
