Mathematical applications within Climate, Environment and Sustainability (CES) take varied forms – but in all cases they underpin our world’s understanding of these pressing issues. Marking the second year of IMA’s Special Interest Group on the topic, this event aims to expose some of these applications, and through this to invite discussions on how the mathematical community can best support these efforts.

The event will be divided in two parts. The morning will feature three keynote talks given by emerging and leading experts from academia and industry, followed by lunch. The afternoon will comprise breakout discussions on the theme of ‘Sustainable Mathematics’ particularly how we can make mathematical research and practice (including computational mathematics) more environmentally sustainable, as well as the role of mathematics and mathematicians in enabling sustainability beyond academia.

These discussions will be followed by a final keynote talk that will bring the afternoon session - led by colleagues at the London Mathematical Society (LMS) - to a close, leaving time for further, optional networking

Please note, this event precedes the in-person, two-day, Green AI Sandpit (supported by the KE Hub for Mathematical Sciences and Innovate UK Business Connect). The sandpit is also held at the same location. Please follow the instructions to apply for the sandpit at this link.

Who should attend this Annual Event?
This event is aimed at mathematicians, and those in related disciplines and backgrounds, from all stages of their career across both academia and industry. There will be plenty of time to network, allowing attendees the opportunity to meet people from across the mathematics and CES spectra. Early-career individuals are particularly encouraged to attend.

Registration
Registration is free of charge. In person attendance is limited to 80 people and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
For attendees with caring responsibilities: Grants of up to £200 are available through the London Mathematical Society (LMS) to parents and carers who wish to attend mathematics events (including this meeting) and require help towards caring costs. For information on the application and deadlines, please see the Caring Supplementary Grants page on the LMS website. For any questions on Caring Grants, please contact [email protected].
