2nd IMA International Conference on Flood Risk Assessment

Date: Tuesday 4 - Wednesday 5 September 2007 Location: University of Plymouth Recent flood events such as occurred at Boscastle in the UK, have highlighted the difficulties in forecasting extreme localised rainfall. The widespread and catastrophic flooding following the Indonesian earthquake in December 2004 heightened the global public awareness of the limitations of existing flood defence infrastructure and flood warning systems. The recent prolonged flooding that has occurred across the UK this summer is an example of the importance of understanding the causes of flooding and the steps that can be taken to reduce its impacts. The conference provided a forum at which engineers, mathematicians and statisticians could meet to exchange views on this important technical area. The emphasis was on new developments in the mathematical and statistical techniques applicable for assessing flood risk.
