Launching: Mathematics Matters

The winners of the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for mathematics at The Parliamentary & Scientific Committee’s STEM for Britain 2026 were announced on Tuesday 17th March at a prize-giving ceremony at the Houses of Parliament, Westminster.

Great mathematical achievement moves our whole community forward. This month, that achievement belongs to Professor Gerd Faltings.

In conjunction with the London Mathematical Society and the Royal Statistical Society, the IMA held its seventh call for the Higher Education Teaching and Learning Series in 2025/26.

We’re delighted that the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is supporting Chartered Week 2026, taking place 23–27 February a national awareness campaign celebrating the impact of chartered professionals across all sectors.

Mathematical sciences now underpin some of the fastest-growing and highest-value sectors of the UK economy, from artificial intelligence and data science to finance, health, infrastructure and advanced engineering. Yet the evidence presented in this report highlights a structural and persistent challenge: minoritised ethnic groups remain materially under-represented in mathematical-science occupations: they make up 19.5% of the working-age population but only 14.8% of those working in mathematical-science roles. Drawing on Census 2021, the Annual Population Survey and the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences’ recent economic

The IMA welcomes the final report of the independent review of the curriculum, assessment and qualifications system in England, published November 2025 (Curriculum and Assessment Review Final Report).

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]The IMA welcomes the publication of the inaugural Review of Mathematical Education (RoME 2025) from the Observatory for Mathematical Education, whose aim is to support the improvement of mathematical education in England. This comprehensive review introduces the longitudinal research carried out by the Observatory in 2024-25, presenting high-level findings from surveys of large cohorts of learners in England in Reception, Year 7 and Year 12 classes and across the transition to university as well as linked data from teachers, curriculum leaders and parents. This wealth of data enables the Review team to examine mathematics education in England deeply and broadly, drawing out conclusions from the data that can help inform how we can better support the mathematical education of young people.
