3rd IMA Conference on Nonlinearity and Coherent Structures

Conference Programme

Nonlinearity plays an important role in many fields of Science, Engineering and Technology. The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers working on aspects of nonlinear phenomena and to encourage interaction between experts from different areas such as Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Engineering and Physics.  Recent theoretical developments, new computational methods and experimental findings will be presented and discussed. We plan to avoid parallel sessions and foster as much as possible communication across the different communities. This Conference has been organised in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and Northumbria University.

Topics of interest

Integrable systems and soliton theory Nonlinear waves and nonlinear evolution equations Dispersive hydrodynamics Rogue waves and extreme wave phenomena Instability in nonlinear media Orthogonal polynomials Mathematical biology Coherent structures in shear flows and transition to turbulence

Laboratory Tours

During the conference, participants will be given the opportunity to take part in a short guided tour of the Northumbria Smart Materials & Surfaces Lab. This is the laboratory facility attached to an eponymous multidisciplinary group formed by 10 permanent members of staff with diverse backgrounds, ranging from applied mathematics and theoretical physics to materials and mechanical engineering. Its research lies at the interface between soft-matter physics and engineering science, with topics that include the interplay between surface chemistry and nano- and micro-topography, static and dynamic wetting of surfaces, the Leidenfrost effect, drag reduction, elastomers/creasing, microsystems/microfluidics, and surface acoustic waves. Two 20-minutes tours have been scheduled in the programme: Wednesday, July 10, at 13:30; and Thursday, July 11, at 13:30. Participants desiring to visit the labs can select their favourite option at the registration.

Invited Speakers

Professor Gennady El (Northumbria University, UK) Dr Karima Khusnutdinova (Loughborough University, UK) Professor Paul Milewski (University of Bath, UK) Professor Barbara Prinari (University at Buffalo and University of Colorado Colorado Springs, USA) Dr Laurette Tuckerman (PMMH-ESPCI, France) Professor Ken McLaughlin (Colorado State University, USA)
