CMS responds to DSIT announcement - A National Academy For Mathematical Sciences

On 26 September 2024, the UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced their "difficult decision to conclude the competition to support the establishment of a new NAM without awarding grant funding". CMS members have provided the following response: "We are very disappointed with the Government’s withdrawal of their commitment of £6m over three years to fund a new National Academy focussed on Mathematical Sciences. The case for a National Academy is compelling and unchanged.  We continue to support the creation of such an Academy to provide the essential connectivity between mathematicians working in academia, education, business, industry, and government which will fuel growth and equip the UK workforce for a modern economy. The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) is already such an organisation.  This visionary enterprise continues to have the strong backing of the community including the Council for the Mathematical Sciences and all its constituent Learned Societies. Signed: Council for the Mathematical Sciences, comprised of Edinburgh Mathematical Society Institute of Mathematics and its Applications London Mathematical Society Operational Research Society Royal Statistical Society" You can read DSIT's full statement here: [Withdrawn] National academy focused on mathematical sciences (closed to applications) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
