The IMA is delighted to welcome a new President for 2024 - 2025, Hannah Fry HonFREng FIMA. Hannah succeeds Paul Glendinning FRSE FIMA who served as IMA President from 2022-2023.
As the world emerged from the Covid pandemic, Paul led the IMA as we adjusted to the changes in working practices and communications. Furthermore, the IMA saw its first new Executive Director in nearly 20 years and Paul provided extensive guidance and support to the new incumbent. Paul’s presidency also timed with the IMA’s five-year strategic review, culminating in our new 2023-28 Strategy. He also represented the IMA on many external activities, including parliamentary events and meetings, ensuring a voice for the Institute in campaigns such as PPM. The IMA would like to express our deepest thanks to Paul for his work as President of the IMA.
Hannah will lead the IMA at another exciting period in our history, with several key milestones to be celebrated over 2024, including our 60th anniversary, the centenary of the birth of our founder James Lighthill FRS FRAeS and the 20th anniversary of the Early Careers Committee. We hope to excite more people about the opportunities that mathematics can bring and deliver new and exciting projects in support of our new Strategy to celebrate our past whilst supporting our present and future communities.
On commencing her role as IMA President, Hannah has said:
"I am so honoured to be taking up the Presidency of the IMA, especially during its 60th year. It is such a unique opportunity to simultaneously look forward to the future and consider how we face the new challenges it will bring while also taking the time to look back and celebrate the rich history of the IMA and all it has achieved over the past 60 years.
I believe mathematics is equally at a crossroads. The pandemic really opened the public’s eyes to just how much of an impact mathematics has on their lives and the desire to understand and explore that hasn’t waned. Especially as we sink deeper into an era of super advanced technology based on mathematical ideas. More than ever, a massively diverse range of people are open and eager for trusted sources to help them navigate the nuances of the modern mathematical world and I believe the IMA is wonderfully placed to guide and encourage that curiosity and drive."
