Why Not Getting It Wrong Is Better Than Getting It Right
Why Not Getting It Wrong Is Better Than Getting It Right, a talk by Professor Veronica Bowman OBE (Dstl)
Professor Veronica Bowman OBE is a Fellow of Statistics and Data Science at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and is internationally recognised as the lead technical expert for Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) knowledge management. She specialises in uncertainty calculation and communication and Bayesian inference. In particular, she has spent many years applying Bayesian methodology and data fusion techniques to problems in the military domain as well as working with academia to improve understanding of how uncertainty is propagated and how decisions should be taken under uncertainty. She then went on to develop the CrystalCast system which provides uncertainty analysis and model combination and formed the backbone of the system used to combine academic models for the government response to COVID-19. This talk will cover her experience and lessons learned developing a variety of mathematical models to support decision making, look at some of the methods developed to help in the COVID-19 response and describe potential areas for future research.
This event will take place in person at the University of Birmingham, and will also be broadcast online via Zoom. There is no need for in-person attendees to register. If you wish to join the event via Zoom, please contact Gemma Reeves by 4.00pm on the day of the talk.
